What we do in Badge Classes

This is where gymnastics begins.
Our classes provide an introduction to basic gymnastic skills, working towards attaining British Gymnastics (BG) Proficiency Award Badges.

The first two badges, badge 8 and badge 7, can be achieved quite quickly and easily to motivate gymnasts, especially when they are young.  The skills become progressively harder and more challenging as the gymnasts achieve badges 6 towards badge 1.  Once badge 1 is reached, further awards in vault, bars beam and floor can be achieved.  When a gymnast passes the skills required for a badge level, they are awarded a fabric embroidered badge and a certificate.  A medal is also awarded with badge 1 to celebrate the gymnast’s substantial success in achieving the level. In addition Greenhead Gymnastics Club has its own club awards for Bars and Beam.

Badge classes consist of basic skills in vault, bars, beam and floor.  An integral part of badge classes involves conditioning, mainly strength and flexibility training which is essential for the learning  all gymnastic skills and is ideal for children progressing not only in gymnastics but most other sports too.  A good basic gymnastic training was the secret of the Russian successes in all sports!

Greenhead Gymnastics badge classes

There is always an element of fun in our badge classes and our lead coaches are all BG qualified and trained in the current UKCC method of delivery which is child-centred.  Competitions and gymnastic displays are periodically organised to give the badge class gymnasts a taste of what they may experience in our gymnastic squads.

Many children from our badge classes go on to continue into our squads.  To prepare them for the transition to training in our squads, pre-squad classes are run.  These pre-squad classes aim to gradually introduce the gymnasts to training and competing as a member of our the more advanced gymnastic squads.

When training in a badge class, gymnasts should wear a leotard or shorts and t-shirt.  Loose fitting clothes and tops with hoods should be avoided for safety reasons.  The gymnasts must remove their shoes before entering the gymnasium and shoes and socks can be left in the changing rooms.  All jewellery must be removed and long hair tied back.
